News of the Day January 27th 2010

N.O.T.D. is here and there is plenty to talk about, so let’s get into it.

“Centurion Club for all!”

By now everyone should know that all registered users on arcanelegions.com now have access to the Unit Builder and every product in our online store. We’ve talked so much about it that I don’t want to go into every detail here, but I do want to stop and acknowledge the good people at Design Commission as well as the staff here at Wells for making this a smooth transition.

Most importantly however, the response from Original Centurion Club members and all our other players has been overwhelmingly positive. Thanks to all of you for coming on this journey with us.

More about this transition can be read here.

“iPhone App is out now!”

In case you missed it (and I know a lot of people did), the official Arcane Legions iPhone App can be downloaded for free right now. It’s a bare-bones release that replicated the functions of the website plus it has an army builder. We wanted to get something out as quickly as possible that you can use to validate custom units without being parked at a computer. And that, among other things, is what you can do with the App. Of course we would love a good review and star rating, but I won’t beg. Much.

“January League Unit Card Revisions”

There was a bit of a mix-up here at Wells H.Q. as it pertains to the unit cards distributed with the January League kits. A few of the unit cards contained alternate wordings for existing Special Abilities, in particular Sniper and Fireburst. We posted about these wordings a while back, but the short answer is that those wordings are only to be used for their scenarios. For all your future games, you can find versions of the Special Ability cards with standard wordings here.

“Chat Attack”

We had an awesome time with the folks that showed up for the first Arcane Legions chat. Thanks to everyone for being cool and Mass Action Minis for hosting. We hope to make this a monthly occurrence, so stay tuned for details on the February chat.

Some important things coming out of the chat include:

The full chat transcript.

The thread where we are taking your submissions for alternate stats for Set One figures.

The thread where we are talking about ideas for how to bring more players into Arcane Legions.

Contributions to these threads is encouraged by management :)

That's about it

Thanks for everything!

Keep playing and spread the word.

Centurion Club is Now Free For Everyone

Arcane Legions player,

By now you may have heard a rumor that the Centurion Club is being offered free-of-charge to all registered users of Arcane Legions. I'm happy to say that this is true and every original member of the Centurion Club should have received an email by now explaining this change.

One of the core values of Arcane Legions is to put as much game design and control over the play environment into the hands of the players. Your collective brainpower will help us make the best game possible. To that end, it has become obvious that the biggest tool and most unique part of Arcane Legions is the unit builder and not everyone has access to it. So this is the first change; we are going to open up the unit builder to everyone. You should have access to it within the next few days so log into www.arcanelegions.com soon to start making your own units.

Keeping with the spirit of "open-source" gaming, it is only right to allow all players access to the bigger, "formerly-exclusive", figures like the Dragons of the Far East. Beginning in March, you should see those figures start to show up in your local game store.

So what about the people who joined the Centurion Club?  For starters, we are fully refunding their membership fees. In addition, as a big "Thank You", we are offering them a substantial discount on a one-time order from the Arcane Legions online store.

Any time you make an innovative & interactive product like Arcane Legions, you run the risk of having to redirect your efforts and change your offering. In this case, we feel like we are doing the right thing, for the right reasons and we are confident that the awesome people who invested in Centurion Club memberships will understand and appreciate this.

As for everyone else, we are really excited to see what you can do with the unit builder! Together we will take Arcane Legions to new heights!

There is going to be a live chat with the game's creators this Sunday, January 24th, ant 2:00pm pacific time, where we will discuss this change and more. The chat will take place at MassActionMinis.com, so see you there.

Thank you for your support and keep playing!

January Chat Transcript Pt. 1

The first few minutes were cut off, but here is the majority of the conversation held on January 24, 2010.

17:07:02 azoxystrobin and greeting from the land of foie gras (France)
17:07:02 Helatus I agree Ethan.. it makes buying boosters even more valuable
17:07:22 Ying Zheng Many of our players also likes that the CEE will soon be available via the local hobby store
17:08:05 spacemonkeymafi Yes, Ying brings up a good point and I think my local groups like seeing the exclusives available through their FLGS
17:08:40 * Larkin_Vain joins Arcane Legions
17:08:41 Helatus Will the price points of the CCE figures remain the same?
17:08:47 Imperator Yeah, we're excited about that too. It puts great playing pieces in more peoples' hands and gives the retailers something to be excited about. Win win.
17:08:50 Larkin_Vain hello
17:09:07 AL_Tyler Just curious, What time is it for everyone?
17:09:07 Culven I also like seeing them available through the store.  Then they don't seem like something that only a few people can get.
17:09:17 AL_Tyler The price will be the same
17:09:19 azoxystrobin i just have to say, that while we are all very chuffed about the centurion club, there needs to be some spreading of the word
17:09:20 Larkin_Vain 12:09 am in Hawaii
17:09:26 garek365 also the shipping charges outside the states were horrible
17:09:31 azoxystrobin people need to know about it
17:09:42 Ying Zheng 11 pm in Germany
17:09:44 Helatus 5 pm here in PA
17:09:46 azoxystrobin get some interest back into what was seen as a very promising game
17:09:56 AL_Tyler azoxystrobin is right!
17:09:57 * jgolbez joins Arcane Legions
17:10:00 Larkin_Vain even in the state shipping was horrible. I paid 15 bucks when i saw it only cost 8 to ship.
17:10:06 azoxystrobin thx :)
17:10:15 jgolbez Hello
17:10:15 Imperator we agree. this is _big_ news!
17:10:19 Helatus Yes please put flyers in new boosters directing peopel to create units online
17:10:28 azoxystrobin but like, the forums were all like: kewl new game
17:10:38 Grim6 The exclusive cards sound really good, it's a nice balance to opening the unit builder
17:10:41 azoxystrobin then, blam!, a couple weeks later back into 40Kids
17:11:04 spacemonkeymafi yeah, or put the info on a sticker on the starter (or a flyer in all the products) indicating this innovation
17:11:07 * maverickman5 joins Arcane Legions
17:11:46 azoxystrobin What might be nice would be an army builder type software
17:11:52 Larkin_Vain oh for any of the chat mods.. the larkinvain account is me, but when I went to a different computer it didn't allow me in chat so I had to register this account just to get in. Hope that's ok.
17:11:57 azoxystrobin just for putting armies together
17:12:19 azoxystrobin erm, rackhams AT43 has a sort of fan based one which works really well
17:12:22 azoxystrobin free too
17:12:35 jgolbez I suggested something similar on the forum today
17:12:38 jgolbez an army builder
17:12:43 Imperator There is a limited amount of stuff we can do to announce new enhancements to the game, and we'll do whatever we can.
17:12:46 spacemonkeymafi AZ- I think there are a few good excel sheets floating around that can help you with army building
17:12:46 azoxystrobin well, i agree with you :)
17:12:54 jgolbez ^.^
17:12:54 Imperator But the single biggest method we have to get the word out is you guys.
17:13:18 AL_Tyler We need ideas to get new people playing the game. Any thoughts ?
17:13:22 azoxystrobin yes, i use excel sheets for just about all my games, but this AT43 one is easy to use and very user friendly
17:13:24 Grim6 One player, who was not a centurion club member, just fielded a full custom sortie army for the Egyptians tonight!
17:13:52 jgolbez Go Mike
17:13:56 AL_Tyler Regarding army building functionality- Has anyone tried the iPhone App ?
17:13:59 Imperator If we tell somebody our stuff is cool, folks just think we're trying to sell them stuff. If you guys tell them something is cool, they know it's coming from a fellow gamer.
17:14:07 jgolbez I dont have an iPhone
17:14:10 azoxystrobin Someone is going to say something about blue. You know it's going to happen.
17:14:16 Larkin_Vain i have android
17:14:16 azoxystrobin I'll go get mah iphone and find out
17:14:22 Larkin_Vain a nexus one
17:14:24 Helatus I wasn't aware there was an Iphone app
17:14:39 Grim6 Webpage is mentioned here as a turn off for new players
17:14:42 loucksj @Grim6 you guys played yet, or is that later?
17:14:51 Larkin_Vain as far as getting new people I suggest a volunteer program.
17:14:57 TheKeeper Demo the game at gaming conventions. I got it handled for WELLS at Garycon 2.
17:15:07 jgolbez If you want ideas to get new people playing, for our location what worked was having the game being played and word of mouth. demos, etc. I know thats not new but worked at our store
17:15:29 Culven I think that the Centurion Club Exclusive figures on the table are one of the best ways to get the attention of new players.  They are big and colourful, and noticable from a distance.
17:15:32 Grim6 we just finished up two league games - 1x Jaws of Death and 1x Ghosts of battle
17:15:46 loucksj I'm just curious how the all Egyptian sortie army did.
17:16:26 jgolbez Did Mike really field all sorties? I think hen learned a lot playing against Grim and I, haha
17:16:37 Grim6 Egyptian sorties won 21 to 9 on the Ghosts of Battle
17:16:48 Larkin_Vain ? I'm lost....
17:16:50 Grim6 !!!
17:17:09 Culven I have to agree with Grim6 about the website.  It is difficult to navigate, and the Forums are even worse.
17:17:28 AL_Tyler The iPhone app is in Alpha. but you can get it (we like to share). And it has an Army Builder in it.
17:17:30 azoxystrobin is the app just called arcane legions?
17:17:31 * spike1111 joins Arcane Legions
17:17:40 loucksj Bam!  He should post that army on the site.
17:17:45 Larkin_Vain will there be an andorid version?
17:17:46 loucksj Maybe do a little strateg walkthrough.
17:17:50 AL_Tyler Az- Yes
17:17:57 Culven I think that set days at stores are also important.  Players need to know when they can show up and have opponents.
17:18:01 azoxystrobin thx, dl now
17:18:04 TheKeeper I will also be running AL at this years Spring Hoopla. If you like (love) a game, or gaming system, you gotta support it. Else it forever dissappears.
17:18:08 Ying Zheng Regarding new players: I am not sure what the target group is...The Hradcore tabletop player of the casual hobby gamer?
17:18:15 AL_Tyler Larkin- Not in the cards yet, but possibly.
17:18:20 spike1111 when is the new set of bosters coming out and
17:18:26 Larkin_Vain thanks Tyler.
17:18:37 azoxystrobin thats a good question
17:18:41 Grim6 From playing other games, I would also recommend dedicated prize support for the Leagues
17:18:48 spike1111 when is the roman  spechel unit be avable
17:19:01 TheKeeper ALL TYPES! Even roleplaying. They need a way to fight large battles.
17:19:16 azoxystrobin wuts spechel? a kind of germ unit? :D
17:19:35 spike1111 the roman  seige
17:19:49 azoxystrobin i dunno, i think casual gamers would be a good start, no need to paint or anything
17:19:54 azoxystrobin just setup and go
17:19:56 Grim6 One comment here, they'd rather see the winner get a big prize than everyone get little prize, maybe a mix of both, some participation przes, but still a bigger prize for the winner
17:20:03 azoxystrobin no extra equipment needed
17:20:03 spike1111 Centurion Club Exclusive: Siege Engines of Rome
17:20:05 AL_Tyler Ying - Arcane was designed to be for more casual players, but we think that with 4th edition D&D being...let's say...challenged, that we may pick up some players who want a faster, simpler combat system
17:20:24 Grim6 of course, that it might be a drain on your resources, and so might not be completely possible
17:20:28 jgolbez I like 4E. I play a game every other week >.<
17:20:34 azoxystrobin lol edition wars in AL chatroom :D
17:20:43 Larkin_Vain here locally it's both. It's has the strategic depth for a the more dedicated gamer
17:20:45 Ying Zheng I had some sucess with casual gamers but it seems difficult to convert WH-players
17:20:45 Culven In my store, the game is appealing more to the table-top wargamers.  It gives them a cheap, easy, and ready to play alternative to Warhammer.
17:20:55 Larkin_Vain yet easy for those new to the hobby.
17:20:59 AL_Tyler We are thinking about promoting a regular game night. But how do we get new guys into your groups?!
17:21:04 azoxystrobin anything that isnt WH is hard for them
17:21:07 Larkin_Vain I have to agree i love this game more than warhammer
17:21:20 azoxystrobin better than 40Kids
17:21:26 Imperator Ying - I would speculate that both demographics you mentioned are represented in this chat.
17:21:38 azoxystrobin without a shadow of a doubt. Then again, most other games are.
17:21:39 jgolbez I got into AL for two reasons. One, I liked the strategy and tactical options for army/unit building and simple gameplay. two: it was 1/10 the price of WH or AT43
17:21:51 azoxystrobin price is important
17:21:52 Grim6 We did a late "launch party" tournament for the dragon, and it went over VERY well!
17:21:54 AL_Tyler jgolbez- Thtg
17:22:00 azoxystrobin but apparently not everything
17:22:04 AL_Tyler thats exactly what we are trying to do
17:22:11 Larkin_Vain it will allow you to get a pulse of the community from those on the ground.
17:22:15 jgolbez AL is my first minis game
17:22:21 Larkin_Vain From my expereince I think having a dedicated volunteer program would help a lot
17:22:23 AL_Tyler Grim - Very interesting idea
17:22:30 Larkin_Vain it will allow you to get a pulse of the community from those on the ground.
17:22:35 Imperator Very cool, Grim.
17:22:42 Imperator You should write up a battle report of the event.
17:22:44 spike1111 so does anyone know when it coming out
17:22:55 loucksj Anybody done Sphinx vs. Dragon yet?
17:23:05 azoxystrobin the sphinx is out???
17:23:10 Larkin_Vain yep
17:23:13 Imperator The Dragon is in March.
17:23:18 Helatus One thing I really like about games such as Mechwarrior and Mageknight was tournaments with nice LE prizes.  Maybe this is something that can be done using the Centurion club figures?
17:23:18 garek365 its been out for like a month
17:23:18 AL_Tyler Larkin- We do have 100 or so volunteers, but I don't think we are necessarily using them ideally yet
17:23:32 * spike1111 quit
17:23:33 azoxystrobin OMG !
17:23:36 * spike1111 joins Arcane Legions
17:23:43 azoxystrobin so it has O_o
17:23:56 azoxystrobin it's hard to get exclusives over here you know
17:24:03 Larkin_Vain Tyler ah thats great! that at least builds you a good foundation for the pulse of thos ehtat play AL
17:24:03 Larkin_Vain Tyler ah thats great! that at least builds you a good foundation for the pulse of thos ehtat play AL
17:24:04 Imperator The sphinx is available via the online store. We're not sure when that'll hit retail yet because it's something of a switch in gears. Probably April or May.
17:24:13 azoxystrobin thats an awful lot of P&P for just one mini
17:24:18 azoxystrobin no matter how exclusive
17:24:20 Grim6 I've got the pictures from the Dragon tourney and a more recent one posted via Dropshots, with commentary.  I know last weeks game (Jaws of Battle) is posted on the forum under the battle reports
17:24:21 Ying Zheng Sphinxes won :) Seems that Dragons need support...
17:24:25 garek365 im in canada and its hard to get them here also, 45$ shipping for a 35$ fig is hard to justify :)
17:24:38 jgolbez The online exclusives.. did anyone ask why the shipping is so high yet? its whats kept me and a lot of others from buying yet
17:24:44 Culven Have you condisered a program similar to the old Games Workshop Outriders?  A group of voulanteers who could be contacted by local stores to run demos and events?
17:24:47 Larkin_Vain Organizing them is a challenge but at least you have "boots on the ground" so to speak.
17:24:50 azoxystrobin Arcan legiosn needs footholds in the old continent
17:25:03 AL_Tyler Hel - I worry that LEs dont' bring in new players, but they make you guys happy. We need to do both.
17:25:08 azoxystrobin more support over here
17:25:24 garek365 @jgolbez apparently with the recent changes the exclusives will be availble to retailers now like the base product
17:25:27 Imperator azoxyxtrobin: the Sphinx and Dragon each come with two minis with different paint jobs.
17:25:31 jgolbez Awesome
17:25:40 jgolbez Then I withdraw the complaint
17:25:45 Larkin_Vain What I learned though is that you need to give those volunteers the freedom to run events in a way that works with their locals. You can have a standardized tournament or league play types
17:25:47 loucksj There's not a lot we can do about the shipping overseas.  One of the reasons we're putting the Dragons into distribution is because we know the shipping is pretty expensive.
17:25:48 Imperator And they are quite big. The sphinx is even resin, so it's even heavier.
17:25:53 azoxystrobin actually we have a sort of 'local' internet store called "ludikbazar" that got hold of a few dragons, and they sold like hot cakes that were hot.
17:26:08 Larkin_Vain but give them the freedom on how to run it in a way that bests suits their community.
17:26:32 Imperator I love the name ludikbazar by the way. I want to name a Gaul after that... ;)
17:26:44 AL_Tyler Larkin- That makes sense. but at the same time if we want to promote it on a national level there has to be some consistency.
17:27:12 * spike1111 quit
17:27:21 azoxystrobin LOL, just launched the AL app on the iphone: pitati archers are mispelled as PAtati archers (patate means potato here !)
17:27:33 Larkin_Vain Tyler - I think consistency comes with league and tournament rules. As long as that is standardzie everyone knows what to expect when playing an any venue.
17:27:34 jgolbez Maybe its nota  typo
17:27:37 Imperator heh
17:27:38 jgolbez maybe they are irish
17:27:43 AL_Tyler Az - Did I mention "Alpha" :)
17:27:45 Imperator oooh. ouch.
17:27:49 azoxystrobin ludikbazar is an excellent shop
17:27:53 jgolbez <--- Irish
17:28:02 azoxystrobin ok, well thats an easy bug to fix :)
17:28:03 Larkin_Vain but if you have hard dates for events to be run that might not be helpful for certain venues.
17:28:09 maverickman5 I like the concept of potato archers
17:28:12 loucksj The night of mists allowed for an accellerated development of the potatoe gun.
17:28:24 * mad monkey joins Arcane Legions
17:28:25 Larkin_Vain but as long a there is a window to get the event/league done i think it should be ok :)
17:28:28 azoxystrobin tyler, where do i tell you all the typos and such?
17:28:38 Culven @Al_Tyler - I don't know that a corporate level policy for promotingt he game will work.

January Chat Transcript Pt. 2

17:28:56 azoxystrobin thx
17:29:15 garek365 any news as to when the "rules" changes (like fire burst needing LoS) and clarifications will be realsed?
17:29:28 jgolbez I do think league play is a bit unfocused. its basically left entirely to the venue to organize and administrate, and the website, while functional, isnt great for it
17:29:45 Helatus speeking of standards across the board.  Many of us are playing with "House Rules"  are there any plans to make a dedicated set of rules that everyone should follow for tournaments?
17:29:50 Ying Zheng I sucess factor might be good support/website where people sind info and not only dicussions about "Blue overpowered". I ve learned that this confuses new players
17:29:58 AL_Tyler Culven- I'm thinking we need to make new players aware with a broad promotion, which helps local stores that can't afford advertising. The promotion pushes them to stores & their groups.
17:30:07 Larkin_Vain a bit more focus would help. also my lgs is not getting word from the distributors on how league kits work etc.
17:30:11 loucksj The technical rules are scheduled to come out mid to late February.  Updated rules text on all abilities should be released simultaneously.
17:30:19 jgolbez Also four boosters a month seems a bit much, I dont know if the average player can play multiple scenarios in a week, but I cant
17:30:46 jgolbez I do love the alternate paint figs tho
17:30:49 AL_Tyler We are radically overhauling Organized Play starting in March.
17:30:55 jgolbez LOVE them
17:31:03 AL_Tyler Feb will have a similar feel to Jan
17:31:04 azoxystrobin getting the release schedules right has gotta be hard
17:31:05 Culven I would think that allowing demos to be more flexible with more standardized league and tournament proceedures would be the best way to go.
17:31:06 jgolbez if you just released boosters with painted alt figs, I'll buty that
17:31:09 garek365 really? can you say anything now on the upcomming changes?
17:31:10 maverickman5 What will the changes be Tyler?
17:31:12 spacemonkeymafi Really Tyler?
17:31:22 azoxystrobin too slow and lose interest, too fast (like GW) and kill interest
17:31:26 Grim6 Recommendation for RLE edition rule book - add in a section for optional/advanced rules that are standardized - for example, some of the concepts for blue, or having standard command radius rule (3 formation lengths...)
17:31:31 mad monkey Soooo, what's the next big figure or special figure after the Roman Ballista?
17:31:39 loucksj As far as tournament rules go, the technical rules should clear up any rules questions.  Tournament procedure and guidlines, however, will not be in the technical rules.  We should have tournament guidlines after we get the technical rules throguh.
17:31:44 azoxystrobin Chariots !
17:32:53 Larkin_Vain chariots would be really cool
17:32:58 Imperator We will not be standardizing any house rules. We will clarify the existing ones, but those will be the standard rules.
17:33:03 Ying Zheng And: Please also support gaming groups not only local stores. Here in Germany we have a different retailing landscape...
17:33:04 Grim6 Another recommendation for league play here - posting the scenarios online so that they can be looked at by all ahead of time - for army building
17:33:11 jgolbez Truth
17:33:17 Imperator We will clarify existing rules, I meant to say. NOT existing house rules.
17:33:33 Ying Zheng Grim: Excellent idea!
17:33:34 Culven Would it be in the budget to have some kind of figure/sortie to be given to new players who play a demo game?
17:33:49 azoxystrobin yes online scenarios is very nice
17:33:50 jgolbez at least post rules if not the scenario map, i realize something should be left to buy the boosters for
17:33:59 Larkin_Vain when AL first came out LGS got bags of single figures to give out.
17:34:09 azoxystrobin i'm not sure that freebies for newbies is any use
17:34:25 AL_Tyler Re: OP - The focus for the next "season," like Mar - May, will be to get more people playing period. Much like what Culven suggests. But it will reward the groups that recruit as well.
17:34:26 azoxystrobin i mean a starter is cheap compared to any other game
17:34:26 Larkin_Vain i have to a gree
17:34:47 Larkin_Vain my lgs ended up giving me all the extras they had left over as no one wanted them.
17:34:48 azoxystrobin why did that double post??
17:35:20 jgolbez If I need to have Arcane figures, I need to know while i have the Unit Builder and a printer, not when I get to the shop
17:35:22 Imperator yeah, azox – free single-figs are great for conventions, but they had little impact in game stores when we did that the first time.
17:35:24 jgolbez gnomesain?
17:35:32 azoxystrobin I think people may be waiting for the next wave
17:35:49 azoxystrobin once people try it, they usually like it
17:35:53 AL_Tyler jgolbez - We will be addressing that with the new OP season
17:35:56 Larkin_Vain i think having a formal volunteer program that people can sign up for with the recommendation of their LGS will help as you will have motive people to do in store demos which really sell the game.
17:36:01 jgolbez Awesome.
17:36:05 azoxystrobin I remember watching the videos thinking, is this gunna be worth it
17:36:17 azoxystrobin and the girl who played the egyptian was nice
17:36:23 AL_Tyler Larkin - Yes! We need to hook up people who want to play but aren
17:36:23 Imperator in-store demos are the single most effective way to get a new player into the game that we've found.
17:36:27 Larkin_Vain all the folks i know didn't get into the game until they actually saw how it was played and then it clicked.
17:36:31 loucksj
17:36:35 Larkin_Vain and then they bought.
17:36:37 garek365 I know that locally a lot of people tried the game and liked it but are holding off until the next set to see where the game is going and what to expect from the future before puttin more money in
17:36:38 AL_Tyler in a group with a group
17:36:44 azoxystrobin word
17:36:55 Imperator She was a very nice girl. You kids be nice...
17:36:58 TheKeeper Large scale, strategic game may be a viable option. Use AL as a optional tactical system.
17:37:05 jgolbez Not to kiss the proverbial hindquarters, but I want you guys to know that as much as you rely on us to get the word out about AL, we (well, me at least) appreciate the reciprocation in answers and transparency of info coming back our way
17:37:16 Grim6 Agree with Garek, some people are only willing to join once they have confidence in the viability of the game
17:37:18 AL_Tyler Repost:  Larkin - Yes! We need to hook up people who want to play but aren't in a group with an existing group
17:37:22 azoxystrobin we can try shouting on rooftops
17:37:31 AL_Tyler Az- Yay!
17:37:47 Larkin_Vain yep
17:37:53 azoxystrobin but yeah i think ppl want to know where it's gonna go from here
17:37:54 Imperator heh. I tried that, but I got was a citation for disturbing the peace...
17:38:08 azoxystrobin lol Imperator, lol
17:38:30 Larkin_Vain AL is a great product and I think now the cent exclusive will be available to the public soon may get more folks in as the pre-painted infnatry and cav packs iwll be made available later.
17:38:31 AL_Tyler We need to support the LGS (and gaming groups outside of stores) with what we can. Tools to connect players together, tools to make your own units, tools to recruit newbs, etc
17:38:41 azoxystrobin is it going to go more fantasy or more historical, more techno, more monsters?
17:38:45 azoxystrobin new factions?
17:38:46 loucksj @Imperator that was for the nudity, not the shouting
17:38:46 Larkin_Vain oh yeah speaking outside groups
17:38:55 Larkin_Vain prize support for them will be great too
17:39:03 Larkin_Vain for those without an lgs.
17:39:22 Imperator nice Jon
17:39:39 Larkin_Vain if tehre was a means to do this I think that would great... especially for those with lgs that aren't willing to get the prize support too.
17:40:09 jgolbez We have had a lot of success recruiting at our FLGS by playing the game when people are around and offering to give them a starter army to try it out. I think theres a lull because AL kind of has iots first wave of players and I think when it gets an xpac we'll see a mix of people who checked it out before, and people who have been hesitant to commit, buy into it
17:40:25 garek365 to be honest the organized play for AL is week, there really is no organized to it, will the changes in march address this or will it be more of the same; here is what we think you should do but do anything you want with it cause we just want you to have fun...
17:40:31 Imperator oh, and @jgolbez: that's not kissing up, that's letting us know you like what we're doing. Believe me, we like to know that's the case.
17:40:31 azoxystrobin Some people get the impression that it isn't really very m### warfare either, but that could be just because they don't have enough infantry boxes
17:40:53 azoxystrobin ma ss got wordfiltered ? fffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
17:41:03 Imperator m###
17:41:07 Helatus lol
17:41:09 Imperator i'll be damned
17:41:11 AL_Tyler m###hole
17:41:11 Larkin_Vain m a s s i ###ume
17:41:19 Larkin_Vain hahha a s s ume
17:41:23 loucksj wow
17:41:32 AL_Tyler fun with filterz
17:41:38 Imperator ok, i need to give somebody crap about that one...
17:41:40 azoxystrobin it could be worse, we could actually have really tried to swear.
17:41:43 jgolbez M A S S action minis.com filtered the word m a s s
17:41:54 loucksj roflm###o
17:41:54 Larkin_Vain irony
17:42:08 azoxystrobin OK, so chariots or not?
17:42:14 Helatus We dont believe in self promotion
17:42:18 azoxystrobin more factions ?
17:42:19 Larkin_Vain say yes pls.
17:42:22 AL_Tyler Az- Stay tuned
17:42:28 azoxystrobin
17:42:31 Larkin_Vain hahah
17:42:40 azoxystrobin even just character chariots would be hella kewl
17:42:56 Larkin_Vain chariots, siege engines.... flying machines?
17:43:07 Ying Zheng Any release date of the siege engines?
17:43:08 azoxystrobin OK, more factions? i noticed, 3 types of dice, 3 factions, each sort of specialising
17:43:26 azoxystrobin so where would more factions fit anyway?
17:43:30 Larkin_Vain spells
17:43:40 Larkin_Vain that would be cool.
17:43:43 azoxystrobin a choice of spells?
17:43:49 Culven I think that the three main factions work fine with the sub-factions within them.  I played a Greek army, and had a blast.  I think it would be easier to just add more groups that join the major factions over time.  Chariots would be nice, but the figures would probably be rather expensive to produce.
17:43:52 azoxystrobin now that would be nice
17:43:54 Larkin_Vain yeah to fill in the 25 - 50 points
17:44:03 Larkin_Vain that seems to get left over for me
17:44:27 Larkin_Vain spells attached to a yellow colored figure or osmething.
17:44:38 azoxystrobin Culven, why/how could they be more expensive to produce than any of the other minis?
17:44:41 Larkin_Vain er yellow slot.
17:44:48 AL_Tyler Larkin- Hmmm....
17:44:54 Culven I think the Han need to have Indian Elephant cavalry.
17:44:57 jgolbez Oh what did you guys think about the banner/card idea for orders or effects? ie, the 'spend points to modify units with banners, or buy cards with points pre-game to play during the game
17:45:04 azoxystrobin and more spells would be nice so that cleopatra is actually useful
17:45:19 Larkin_Vain Tyler cause ya know i need to fill in the 25 to 50 points I"m usually short
17:45:19 azoxystrobin i would rly have liked death touch to be on par with fireburst
17:45:20 jgolbez I think thatd add a huge depth for practically no investment on your end
17:45:44 Larkin_Vain exactly... just a card pack.
17:45:45 Grim6 Banners were cool to look at, but sort of a let down, ultimately, when people figures out you can't really do anything with them
17:45:55 Larkin_Vain make a faction card back for ###ort spells or osmething.
17:45:58 jgolbez Oh the league banners.. yeah
17:46:11 azoxystrobin yes but -banners- ! guys, bannnnnneers
17:46:19 jgolbez I meant what we were talkinga bout before when you showed me that other game
17:46:26 Grim6 Suggestion, let banners make a stand in for a figure , sort of like nexus concept...
17:46:27 azoxystrobin and musicians too
17:46:30 Larkin_Vain make a faction card pack for an a s s ort spells or osmething.
17:46:37 AL_Tyler OK, you can'
17:46:38 * TheKeeper quit
17:46:42 loucksj AZO We've announced our plan to do alternate stats for figures in the future, is that what you're looking for in Cleopatra?
17:46:43 spacemonkeymafi I agree with Grim and the first thing I did is mod the Participation banners into VP counters
17:46:49 azoxystrobin the units seem empty without banners and such tomfoolery
17:47:02 Grim6 SMM, what you did looks awesome!
17:47:21 AL_Tyler OK, you can't hold me to this but the Siege Engines should be around the end of June.
17:47:22 spacemonkeymafi thx! it was pretty easy too
17:47:29 jgolbez I ike the alternate stats thing too. I wouldnt have thought of it and its a free wya to expand your figs
17:47:38 azoxystrobin even playmobil legionaries have banner bearers
17:47:38 Larkin_Vain awesome! Tyler... cat' wait
17:47:46 garek365 any changes to cleo would be great... as it stands now she is 700pts of eye candy..
17:47:49 Grim6 People are excited about the alternate stats here
17:48:03 Larkin_Vain cleo with spell options   would be awesome
17:48:06 azoxystrobin i would like alternate stats for achilles
17:48:13 mad monkey Siege Engines? Nice. Thanks for the info.
17:48:37 azoxystrobin shouldn't all factions have big siege weapons available though?
17:48:44 loucksj jgo - the unit builder lets us do things that no other game can do, like alternate stat figures.  Another reason why opening it up to the public is a good thing.
17:48:49 jgolbez They may in the future
17:48:52 azoxystrobin the roman scorpio was pretty common apparently
17:48:54 jgolbez Han siege engine is a dragon
17:49:05 AL_Tyler RE: Alternate stats. There is a thread going already with people's suggestions. You guys should *really* tell us what you want to see. And be very specific. There is a good chance your designs will make it in if they aren't crazy.
17:49:11 spacemonkeymafi Tyler, so with the Siege engines coming out later, will you be changing the "every month release" model or do you guys have things lined up in between?
17:49:28 azoxystrobin but they all knew how to make and use catapults at the time didn't they? even without the nioght of mists
17:49:41 jgolbez PLease for the love of the Emperor, bring Devoted back to Terracotta. I have like 500 of them and no reason to ever field them
17:49:42 AL_Tyler Mafia- We're going to try and stay in that range/
17:49:54 azoxystrobin i only want achilles to lose his suicidal special rule...
17:50:03 garek365 isnt there a worry that with too many stats the unit builder will become hard to use? Its allready a pain to find figs in it has it stands now
17:50:11 Imperator Aww come on – I love my cannonfodder... I mean, terracotta soldiers
17:50:24 * Grim6 quit
17:50:24 jgolbez Terracotta in a formation are free VP and order point soaks.. Terracotta ina  sortie are... well, suicide
17:50:27 azoxystrobin no, they are right, terracotta need it back
17:50:30 AL_Tyler Garek - We are addressing this already
17:50:31 spacemonkeymafi Tyler- thanks  also, how specific are you wanting on the alt stats?
17:50:32 * Grim6 joins Arcane Legions
17:50:39 Grim6 oops
17:50:47 Grim6 devoted = more foddery
17:50:50 azoxystrobin i bet they mean you propose, they will dispose
17:50:55 loucksj jgo - that's really interesting, bringing back old Demo figures.  I mean, we changed them for a reason, but taking a look back with more experience under our belt just might work...
17:50:59 azoxystrobin sounds fair

January Chat Transcript Pt. 3

17:51:13 Imperator hah
17:51:14 AL_Tyler Mafia & everyone else- The more data you give us, the more you have tested, the more likely your designs go in.
17:51:27 Larkin_Vain cool.
17:51:31 azoxystrobin yes but devoted allows for some underhanded tactics by the han player
17:51:40 Grim6 bump up the price, of course, or else jgolbez will be running them all over me...
17:51:46 AL_Tyler Han, underhanded ?!?
17:51:47 jgolbez All I'm saying is Devoted, as an ability, makes Terracotta worth the space. Its never been about point value, but 250 pts of unit still gives 2VP for dying and takes 2OP to order
17:51:54 loucksj Lies
17:51:57 Imperator price, as always, entirely depends on abilities.
17:52:03 jgolbez Oh, yeah up the points of course
17:52:10 azoxystrobin lol, underhanded will make a change to laden with crossbows and fireburst
17:52:23 azoxystrobin i think blue may simply bee too cheap
17:52:28 loucksj We'll just give devoted to the Yetis and be done with it.
17:52:37 jgolbez Sounds fine
17:52:40 azoxystrobin so yeah price (points wise) makes a big difference
17:52:40 Larkin_Vain heheh
17:52:59 Grim6 they might get fielded...
17:53:00 spacemonkeymafi that's all good...I'
17:53:02 jgolbez Hardly use those either because with Cowardly they never roll white dice anyway ^.^
17:53:09 azoxystrobin make regen more available to terracotta?
17:53:25 azoxystrobin regen as in regeneration
17:53:32 Grim6 more artificer?
17:53:39 jgolbez Maybe if Nuwa had Lady of Clay and could roll 1d6 for Terracotta
17:53:50 spacemonkeymafi the fluff seems to support more artificiers
17:53:54 Larkin_Vain Tyler I don't know if this was asked but when can we expect the next expansion?
17:53:56 Grim6 whose Nuwas amte?
17:54:04 Grim6 amte = mate
17:54:05 jgolbez Fuxi
17:54:13 azoxystrobin i think thats been hinted at larkin
17:54:18 Grim6 thank you!
17:54:20 Imperator regenrating clay, eh? Spacemonkey's got a point that the flavor would go more towards outside repair
17:54:23 loucksj AZO - I've heard it said that Savros Kuznetzov wants Artificer.
17:54:31 Larkin_Vain ah any month noted AZ?
17:54:40 azoxystrobin i think nuwa should become a generic soldier rather than a character
17:54:46 Imperator what?
17:54:49 loucksj Ooo demotion
17:54:50 Imperator ok, that's just wacky.
17:54:52 spacemonkeymafi I definitely want Savros to have Artificer
17:54:55 azoxystrobin no, i mean the question has been asked
17:55:03 jgolbez why would nuwa not be a commander?
17:55:05 Larkin_Vain hahah ok   got it
17:55:16 AL_Tyler Re: New expansion. I can
17:55:24 Imperator she is unique, hence she can't be a generic troop
17:55:30 azoxystrobin because nuwa makes terracotta better, but as commander can only bump few units
17:55:39 garek365 maybe she has a sister? or sisters?
17:55:46 azoxystrobin if nuwa was a generic, then you could have several
17:55:48 jgolbez HOT SNAKE SISTAZ
17:55:51 Imperator no, she's a mythological goddess
17:56:02 Larkin_Vain @tyler.... you can tell us when?
17:56:03 AL_Tyler Re: New expansion. I can't announce anything formally, but I can say it's more likely to be a month starting with a "J" than a month starting with an "A"
17:56:05 Imperator the way to get to that is to make a green-circle artificer
17:56:06 jgolbez www.slitherhither.com
17:56:06 Grim6 maybe have a toned down version of nuwa, like the hand of osiris equivalents?
17:56:07 loucksj Maybe we'll bring the Cleo actress back for inspiration jgo
17:56:11 azoxystrobin or maybe make a subcl### of nuwa, they call them lamia dont they?
17:56:16 Imperator that way you can have multiples without stepping on the fiction.
17:56:17 mad monkey Keep Nuwa as a commander, with 1d6 repair, make some naga figures to be unit enhancers with Nuwas present repair ability.
17:56:26 azoxystrobin omg "subcla-ss"
17:56:29 Larkin_Vain Thanks! Tyler... so June or July instead of August
17:56:30 spacemonkeymafi I think the fluff was saying she trained others in artifice
17:56:34 azoxystrobin oops, i mean naga
17:56:43 Imperator sorcerer artificers would be the way to go. naga had no power over clay.
17:56:43 AL_Tyler Yeah, something like that.
17:56:58 Larkin_Vain Any big gencon releases?
17:57:02 azoxystrobin drat
17:57:11 * pararamids joins Arcane Legions
17:57:15 Imperator naga would be damn cool soldiers though
17:57:16 AL_Tyler See above answers
17:57:17 garek365 If han gets artificers does that mean egypt gets more lords of the dead?
17:57:22 spacemonkeymafi welcome pararamids!
17:57:25 Larkin_Vain heheh ok
17:57:25 Imperator take that, Minotaurs...
17:57:28 azoxystrobin new expansion; when?
17:57:38 azoxystrobin hi parararararamids
17:57:41 Grim6 egypt has them - hand of osiris (or is it isis)?
17:57:45 loucksj Who's following us on twitter / facebook?
17:57:47 AL_Tyler 5 minute warning!
17:57:47 Larkin_Vain @tyler has WE ever thought of making prepainted terrain for AL?
17:57:50 jgolbez FB
17:57:58 Grim6 I'm following on twitter
17:58:07 Imperator an alternate stat set for the necromancer chick could very well have less powerful lord-of-the-dead abilities if the testing stood up to scruting
17:58:12 AL_Tyler Larkin- We have thought about it, but I don't think its in the cards this year
17:58:13 Imperator scrutiny, i mean
17:58:29 jgolbez 3D Terrain isnt useful in AL yet, since all terrain is imp###able.. hithero's 3d stuff looks great but require house rukles
17:58:40 garek365 Hand of Osiris are kinda bad when you see the only thing they can raise is 1 skelly a turn... need bigger undead for them to be worthwhile
17:58:45 Larkin_Vain @tyler thanks... while not useful it does provide a nice visual.
17:58:57 AL_Tyler Terrain might not always be imp@$$able. Just sayin
17:58:58 Larkin_Vain I'd fork over money for a 3d terrain pack.
17:59:05 Grim6 3d terrain interferes with the game (measuring).  People like the ease of paper
17:59:26 jgolbez I'd love to seem more terrain types. Like Earthworks for defense, hills for high ground etc
17:59:28 Larkin_Vain @tyler i've always wondered why is AL played the long way instead of the wide wya on the table.
17:59:49 Larkin_Vain was the the original intention?
17:59:50 loucksj This chat has gone pretty well.  I'd say we're going to try to do this at least once a month, if you guys are interested
17:59:51 Culven I like the portability of paper terrain.  I also laminate it for durability.
17:59:56 Grim6 more terrain types would be good, like water - not move, but does not interfere otherwise...
17:59:58 jgolbez I'd love to
18:00:04 Imperator Larkin: it's proximity of control terrain. We didn't want everyone immediately able to get on control terrain turn 1 without some abilities to make it happen.
18:00:08 AL_Tyler Larkin- We found that the opening of the game is really important and we want it to breathe
18:00:09 Grim6 Once a month sounds good!
18:00:12 jgolbez It's a date! I'll have my people call your people.
18:00:14 azoxystrobin yes esay of 2D is nice, but some people have found it offputting
18:00:27 AL_Tyler LOL, same answer said differently
18:00:37 spacemonkeymafi Yeah, I'd like to see regular chats- maybe with some kind of theme you'd like to touch on for the first half and then free-for-all the second?
18:00:45 Larkin_Vain ah ok it works well.. i was curious on the original design aspect.
18:00:49 AL_Tyler Mafia - I like it
18:00:50 Grim6 azo - it's a balance between appeal and ease of access
18:00:55 jgolbez maybe with an agenda, these chats.. ie, today we talk about proposed rule change
18:00:56 jgolbez etc
18:01:01 AL_Tyler For now, I want to leave you with the following orders;
18:01:17 azoxystrobin i like, honest, but i also like hills
18:01:18 AL_Tyler 1. We need ideas for how to get new people to play.
18:01:21 Larkin_Vain Thank you Tyler for your time.
18:01:29 Imperator 3d works just fine, because it's imp###ible. If it weren't, then 3d terrain would not work because you'd have to balance your base on trees or rocks or whatever. paper works in all situations, but the rules make 3d possible which I think improves the table look.
18:01:32 azoxystrobin ok see you guise
18:01:36 Imperator oops
18:01:39 jgolbez Thanks for your time
18:01:42 azoxystrobin you didnt tell us when the next expansiion hits
18:01:44 Imperator time to go.
18:01:48 AL_Tyler 2. Alternate stats. We will publish your designs if they are awesome and complete. So go forth
18:02:00 jgolbez well how alternate
18:02:05 jgolbez just dice? or what
18:02:11 maverickman5 good night guys
18:02:11 AL_Tyler AZ- Probably this summer
18:02:16 * garek365 quit
18:02:17 spacemonkeymafi anything goes with alternates
18:02:18 azoxystrobin they said anything jgol
18:02:21 azoxystrobin thx
18:02:22 Grim6 new abilities, or just restructure old abilities?
18:02:23 Larkin_Vain as you command!
18:02:23 Imperator alternate abilities are a good thing as long as they're not broken
18:02:27 azoxystrobin looking forward to it
18:02:31 jgolbez Okay. Got it
18:02:35 * centuriioapdani joins Arcane Legions
18:02:38 azoxystrobin like we ever make anything broken

18:03:01 Imperator don't forget to think of it in a flavor frame. Something that's cool and works with the flavor beats something that's cool but turns the fiction on its head.

Replacement and Errata Unit Cards Now Available!

Replacement and Errata Unit Cards Now Available!

You may have noticed as you tore into your Arcane Legion Boosters that there were some inconsistencies.  Some of the unit cards found in the Boosters (many of the loose cards and some of the commander units) were intentionally designed to use additional Booster figures not necessarily included in the same box.  However, there were a couple of Unit Cards that were incorrect.  These Unit Cards have now been adjusted and are now in line with the figures that you currently have.  We have made all 5 Units Cards readily available for download so you don’t have to wait any longer to put your units into play.

Han Dynasty:

Spider's Kiss (Unit 1-303)

Spider Warrior (Unit 1-304)

Egyptian Imperium:

Cyclops Squad (Unit 1-302)

Cyclops Gang (Unit 1-301)

Roman Empire:

Machina Mortis (Unit 1-054)

This download is to correct an error in the original Machina Mortis card.  The original card contained slots that did not fit its required figures.

We apologize for the inconvenience. If you have any additional concerns, questions about the Unit Cards, or how to use the figures that you have please feel free to contact us at support@wells-expeditions.com.

Arcane Legions a Hit at Penny Arcade Expo 09!

Arcane Legions at PAX 09

September 9, 2009 (Bellevue, WA) — Wells Expeditions™ made a strong showing at PAX 09 with the upcoming Arcane Legions mass action miniatures game!

Garnering even the attention of Penny Arcade's founders, Gabe and Tycho (Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins), Arcane Legions was a huge hit at PAX this year, especially notable considering the main focus of the show, unlike most fan conventions across the country, is not on tabletop games or comic books.

With our banners unfurled and demo tables arrayed at the booth, we surprised PAX's crowd with a game that was both new and extremely exciting, needing nothing more than a table and a friend to play with.  We carried the full line of Arcane Legions' initial release, including Starters, Army Packs, and Boosters, all of which flew off the shelf at an astounding pace!

Could it have had something to do with our outstanding booth staff, decked out in the finest in Roman and Egyptian fashion?

We here at Wells Expeditions were also surprised by the level of excitement shown by the visitors to the booth.  For a convention full of video game players there sure seemed to be plenty of hardcore tabletop gaming fans in attendance as well, and what they saw, they loved!

All weekend long we attracted current tabletop fans as well as people young and old brand new to the genre.  PAX's Free Play Halls were filled up for the entire convention with players ravenous for more Arcane Legions warfare. Be sure to visit www.arcanelegions.com for the latest developments as we near the product's worldwide release date of October 7, 2009!

GenCon All Abuzz

Arcane Legions is the talk of the Con!

August 20, 2009 (Bellevue, WA) — Wells Expeditions™ wowed the crowds at Gen Con when they debuted their initial product offering: Arcane Legions™, a new collectable mass action miniatures game.

Gen Con is often the forum where publishers show off their new offerings, and though Arcane Legions is not scheduled to release until this fall, Wells Expeditions had product available two months in advance.  With a booth full of demo tables, shields looming above their heads and beautiful ladies ready to show new players how the game is played, the folks at Wells Expeditions waited to see if the crowd they hoped for would come to learn about the game.  And come they did.

As soon as the hall opened, the booth filled with players of all ages eager to learn how to play and to purchase the initial Arcane Legions offerings.  Though the reward for a demo was a customized fortune cookie (demos far exceeded expectations and fortune cookies ran out on Saturday morning), many players further enjoyed the free Boosters that accompanied some of the fortunes!  Many learned that although the Boosters are collectable (that is, contain randomized contents), Army Packs are faction-specific, so getting the army they wanted is easy on the budget.  The booth was not the only place where Arcane Legions was a huge hit.  All weekend long the tournament hall was running both Constructed and Sealed events, taking up a good chunk of tables upstairs and often completely selling out event spaces — making for exciting and competitive games.

Not to mention we also had our very first King of Con Tournament Champion Christian Busch!

Wells Expeditions also got an education, having a chance to field questions from curious attendees with fresh eyes.  The company elaborated on product specs, scenarios and organized play and the specific and flavorful abilities of the game’s three factions.  Many answers to these questions, including descriptions of the benefits of the primary factions, are answered at ArcaneLegions.com.

Wells Expeditions could not be more pleased with the buzz surrounding Arcane Legions — buzz they hope to continue at the Seattle Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in two weeks at booth 3017.  If you are in the Seattle area, this is your chance to see for yourself what everyone’s talking about!
